FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY...

On September 1, 2010, the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control (OHHLHC) released the FY2010 Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for the Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Grant Program.  Under this grant program, $48 million is available to urban jurisdictions including cities, counties, and states with the greatest lead-based paint hazard control needs.

Under this program, qualifying cities, counties and states will be eligible to receive a grant of up to $4.5 million for lead hazard reduction.

To be eligible under the Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Grant Program, applicants must:

  • Contain at least 3,500 pre-1940 rental housing units
  • Provide a matching contribution of at least 25% of the requested grant amount, unless a waiver is formally requested by September 21, 2010.  Applicants whose waiver request has been approved must provide a matching contribution of at least 10% of the requested amount.
  • Designate 80% of the requested grant amount for direct lead hazard control activities as defined in the NOFA.

Please Note: Applicants awarded either a Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control grant or a Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration grant under the FY2009 NOFA competition or under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 are not eligible to apply for the FY2010 Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Grant Program. However, applicants that were partially funded for either program last year are eligible to apply. Applicants may only apply for either a Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant or a Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Grant, but not both.

We encourage all eligible jurisdictions to review the application and apply for funding.  It is due to programs such as the Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Grant that such tremendous strides have been made in the battle against childhood lead poisoning.  Applications are due October 15, 2010.
